Have you felt it? The heart restlessness when life is stagnant? Or the deep longing to do something, to matter? It should come as no surprise to us when our hearts whisper “more.” We were created to grow and to change and to live outside ourselves in order to serve and bless the world around us.
That stirring was the primary catalyst for my launching myself into the blogosphere this year. (You can read that whole story here.) I have said so many times, and will continue to say, that I absolutely know I am so incredibly blessed to be able to stay home with my children. But, having been out of the workforce for almost 7 years, on a scale of 1-10 of how much I feel like I’ve contributed to society, most days I’d rate myself at a .5. And honestly it’s a struggle to keep that from translating to self-worth (though that is certainly a battle I’m willing to fight!) I love being a mom, but I want more. I desire to write, to create, to encourage and share truth – to live transparently for the sake of others. So when I found out at the beginning of this month that I had been chosen to be a part of the launch team for Crystal Paine’s (www.moneysavingmom.com) new book, Money Making Mom, I knew it wasn’t a coincidence. (Though truthfully, I don’t put much stock into coincidences anyway.)
As you might gather from the title, this book is about moms making money and being entrepreneurs, but it is really much more than that. She not only challenges you to think outside the box, but also to perhaps get rid of the box all together! Within the pages of this book are inspiring stories of many women who became entrepreneurs both out of necessity and through simply recognizing a need and an open market. There are endless ways to make money out there – but what drives you? Don’t focus so much on what has worked for others, but take some time to identify your God-given talents and your passions as a jumping off point. And maybe share those with someone else who might be able to see things about your that you can’t and lend their perspective to help you generate more ideas. We so often limit ourselves to the box that we’ve created, but other people can’t see our box! While reading this book, I came up with business ideas for three other women in my life! If you’ve ever thought of starting a business, this may be just the resource you need to help you throw away the box and start working toward that dream!
Even more important than the “what” of starting a business, is the “why.” Maybe you desire to stay home with your littles, but need two incomes to make ends meet. Maybe you have savings goals that require a little more cash than is currently being brought home. Or maybe you desire to make more money just so you can give it away. I know in our consumeristic society, that sounds crazy, but as I read the second half of Crystal’s book, her heart for giving and helping others bled all over the pages. If we are simply becoming entrepreneurs to increase our bank accounts, there will never be enough. While we fill our closets and rent storage units to house our extra stuff, others struggle to clothe and feed their children. I absolutely love, and will likely steal, Crystal’s family’s motto: “Live simply so that others can simply live.” We were created to live for more than ourselves! There’s a whole world that needs our talents, our stories, and yes, our resources. There are so many needs that exist, and we can’t save everyone, but we can certainly make a difference for a few. Living life with an open hand will reap more blessings than an impressive portfolio – for us and for others!
