If you’ve spent more than 10 minutes in church, especially around Easter, you have likely heard of a guy named Barabbas. He is described as both a thief and a murderer. (John 18:40, Luke 23:25). A charming fellow, no doubt. According to the gospels, it was Roman tradition to release one
convict from prison every year at the time of Passover. While we are not really given much insight into when or why this tradition was established, nor are we given any other instances of this happening, we are given one earth-shattering account of the crowd’s deciding between Barabbas – a notorious prisoner – and Jesus – a Man who claims to be something they don’t believe Him to be, God, and is only guilty of loving and healing others, and ticking off the wrong people by exposing them for who they are: sinners. They, of course, chose Barabbas because that’s what they had been told to do. And because who wouldn’t choose to have a known murderer living among them and also put to death the only Man who had proven He could raise people from the dead.
Wow! What a bunch of gullible lemmings! It’s a good thing we are a much more advanced and intelligent society, and can completely think for ourselves. We obviously would never choose Barabbas. We’re smarter than that.
Fast forward 2,000 years, give or take a few. If you’ve spent more than 10 minutes online, then you’ve likely seen this newsworthy story taking the Internet by storm: the recent indictment of David Daleiden by the Harris County, Texas, grand jury. Daleiden is the founder of The Center for Medical Progress, and took it upon himself to expose the truth of the horrors that take place daily at Planned Parenthood locations all across the country. His crime? Apparently, making a fake ID and attempting to purchase fetal tissue from Planned Parenthood.
So let me get this straight buying dead baby parts is a crime (which, he never actually bought) but selling them is not? And his other crime is akin to what the majority of college freshman (and many high school students) do every year to get into bars and clubs, and yet, to my knowledge, not one of them has been arrested for such a violent and heinous crime!
Let’s be real. The progressive left has an agenda. Planned Parenthood supports that agenda. And so they support Planned Parenthood, and will protect them, like a momma bear with her cubs (ironic comparison, I know), from villainous truth-sharers and light-shedders.
While I would never try to make any stretch of a comparison between Daleiden and Jesus – because Jesus obviously has no equal, it is pretty easy to draw a solid line between Planned Parenthood and Barabbas. And so here we are, with all our pseudo-integrity and smarts, as a nation, choosing Barabbas once again. History, like an obnoxious boomerang, keeps coming back to repeat itself. God help us.
In our Orwellian society, without blinking an eye, we choose death over discomfort, and ignorance over inconvenience. We value personal choice while scoffing at the idea of having personal responsibility. And while the poor, innocent babies become the sacrifices in our sanctimonious self-worship, they’re not the only ones who suffer.
There is a seldom-mentioned silent suffering of the survivors of abortion. Not the handful of babies who, by God’s providence, managed to survive their attempted homicide. The survivors are the mother’s from whose bodies their child was torn like an appendix or gull bladder or some other non-essential organ. And the survivors are the fathers who will never hold their babies.
It is an inexplicable pain knowing that a child died inside your body. I know this much. And there is an incredible weight in carrying around a dead baby in your heart for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. To have been the cause of my baby’s death is not a weight I can wrap my mind around. It must be unbearable. And indeed it is. According to the Washington Times, a 1996 study in Finland found that “the suicide rate was nearly six times greater among women who aborted than among women who gave birth.”
So now, while no one will say as much, we are actually choosing death twice. Once for the baby, and once for the mother. Even if she never attempts to take her own life, even if she seems to have no emotional scars from her choices whatsoever, even if she won’t admit it to herself – there is an emptiness, an eerie silence, and an irreversible death. And while, more often than not it is truly the woman’s own choice that brings this heaviness into her life, she is the one for whom I am praying. Because she is the one, much like the accused Daleiden, who is carrying around a false identity. To the world she appears to be not a mother, but she has created a child and therefore is exactly that. A living child is not what defines one as a mother – as we would certainly never say that a woman who lost her child to disease or tragedy is no longer a mother because her child is dead. And her other fake ID is that of telling everyone she is “fine” because she is not. So please pray for her.
Jesus came into this world on a false ID of His own. Everyone saw the exterior and assumed He was a man, when He was (and is), in fact, God. Everyone knew who Barabbas was as he is described as a “notorious sinner.” What Planned Parenthood truly is has become plain to all, and for the most part they’re not even trying to hide it anymore. Except for one man who decided to expose their sin. He clearly has to pay! We like being comfortable in our sin. Ignorance is bliss. So ignorantly, and comfortably, and confidently, we choose to let the murderer go free. Apparently, we still choose Barabbas.
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” Isaiah 5:20-21
I am a wife, mother, and Christ-follower who desires to see everyone telling the stories God has written into their lives, for the His glory and the benefit of others. I also run on sarcasm, coffee, and a whole ton of grace! Thanks for stopping by, and I do hope you'll stick around!
